We help our affiliates mobilize local churches so they can effectively, in a coordinated way, serve their neighbors in need.
We seek to activate Christians’ faith into serving in areas where they are comfortable and where their talents reside.
Our affiliates connect Christian churches in shared outreach to help their struggling neighbors.
We connect Christians from different denominations to serve together.
We connect affiliates from 30 states across the U.S.
Our affiliates link service organizations, agencies and Christian churches to complement each other.
We strive to build Christ-like, caring relationships with people:
- With neighbors whom our affiliates’ and their partner churches serve
- Among each other as Christians
- Among Christian churches across denominations
- With community groups, organizations, agencies and others
- Between Love INC National and our affiliates
We strive to be a catalyst of transformation through serving and through relationships.
We seek to grow in health and strength in all ways – emotionally, spiritually, mentally, relationally and materially – and to bring that growth to all with whom we connect.
Love In the Name of Christ is a church-based ministry that began in 1977 in Holland, Michigan.
Its founding vision was to become a tool to help Christian churches become more engaged with their neighbors who had needs. Love INC was designed to inspire a more Christians to put their faith into action.
Love INC’s founder, Dr. Virgil Gulker, was a social worker and outreach director. Deeply committed to helping people who found themselves lacking resources or a support network, he was certain God had called Christian churches to the same mission.
As he talked to church members and pastors, Dr. Gulker realized that Christians do indeed want to help their neighbors who are struggling, but they often do not know how to do so. Many times people attending church did not even recognize that they were gifted in ways that could have a positive, life-changing impact on someone else’s life.
It was clear to Dr. Gulker that if churches were to better serve their communities, they needed leadership, organization, training, encouragement, and prayer. He developed the Love INC model to fill these critical roles.
Love INC helps churches help people. It teaches churches how to assess their capabilities, connect with their neighbors, build new ministries and find fulfilled volunteers, and serve their community. It also unites a variety of congregations in a single purpose of serving so that, working together, all churches can more effectively offer real help to their neighbors.
Over the past decades, one man’s idea for an integrated church ministry in his community inspired Christians in other regions. By the late 1980s, Love INC affiliates had opened in over a dozen states.
As the Love INC ministry grew, so did the need for national leadership and support – to assist communities in building a local Love INC ministry and to help operating Love INC ministries effectively serve. In 1988, Love INC National became an operating department of World Vision U.S., an international Christian relief and development organization, where it remained for the next fifteen years.
Under World Vision, Love INC continued to grow throughout the 1990s, and in 2001, Love INC separated from World Vision and again became its own national nonprofit organization.
In early 2011, Love INC completely restructured its U.S. operations, going to a “virtual” (on-line) office model, significantly reducing its operating costs while providing more timely and consistent resources while offering up-to-date networking among the operating affiliates.
Currently 135 Love INC affiliates in 30 states represent a network of more than 8,600 churches, 9,200 community-based organizations and 100,000 Christian church volunteers.
